I’ve been swamped with lots of exciting Mapping Manhattan events (if you’re in New York Thursday May 16th, come to next week’s powerHouse arena reading/party at 7pm. More info here, but all you really need to know is that there will be copious amounts of Hudson Rye Whiskey for delicious Manhattan making), but I can’t wait to start posting all your new, beautiful maps of Manhattan.

The latest one that’s diverting my attention from scanning and posting is tonight’s TedXWilliamsburg conference! I’ll be speaking about maps, memory & of course Mapping Manhattan.

Tune into the livestream here. The event starts at 6pm EST, and I’ll be on closer to 8pm.

So thrilled to be moderating the discussion and live illustration event “Parisians vs. New Yorkers” hosted by Untapped Cities at the gorgeous French Consulate on 5th Avenue and 79th Street TOMORROW May 2nd from 6:30-8:30pm. The event is free and I’ll be signing copies of Mapping Manhattan after! RSVP here.

(Vahram Muratyan, the genius behind Paris vs. New York will, unfortunately, not be there, but how could I resist using baguette vs. bagel as the picture for this post? plus he has a map in the book and is just an all-around lovely guy.)

My grandfather, Irwin Cooper, was a Broadway and jazz drummer in the 1950s and ’60s in New York, and a member of the Local 802—the musicians’ union.
This map by Local 802’s Allegro columnist, Bill Crow, makes the jazz of my grandfather’s New York come alive again. You can read Crow’s monthly Bandroom Columns here.

Digital submission by my brain crush, Brain Picking’s Maria Popova. Read her write-up here.

If you’d like to fill out a Manhattan of your own, click here to download your own blank map. Or pick up a copy of the book — the last map is blank for your Manhattan to be added in.

Love this map inspired by the Death Cab for Cutie song, The New Year. The dotted lines are what happens when you take the map, fold any point to meet the “home” dot, and mark the path of the crease.
