Map Your MemoriesTM is a collaborative art project created by Harvard graduate Becky Cooper that asks strangers to fill in the outlines of a place with whatever is meaningful to them. It is your chance to capture your city, your myth, your home on paper.
Mapping Manhattan, the book based on the project, will be published by Abrams in April 2013. It also features gorgeous ink and watercolor sketches of NYC by Bonnie Briant. You can order it here and here and here!
It started with Manhattan in the summer of 2009 when Becky was still an undergraduate at Harvard University. Inspired by Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities, as well as her own experience creating a map of New York’s public art, Becky walked the length of Broadway, distributing over a thousand letterpress-printed outlines of the borough to the widest variety of New Yorkers she could find. (The wizardly designer, Dan Ashwood, is the master behind the base map design.)
This ongoing project has been featured in the The New York Times Magazine, The New York Post, The Wall Street Journal, Time Out New York, The Harvard Crimson and The Harvard Advocate and has been exhibited in gallery spaces around New York and Cambridge.
Becky, with the help of Hugo Van Vuuren she has expanded the project to Harvard Square, and she hopes to continue spreading the project to other cities. She has her eyes set on Paris and Berlin.
